My First 3D Print

After months of creeping around the 3D printers of Cologne’s city libraries I finally printed my first object! It’s a shadow cube inspired by the cover of one of my dad’s most formative books, Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas Hofstadter. This 5×5×5 cm thing of hardened filament is one of my birthday presents for my dad.

And gifting something I made makes me happier than I care to admit.

A snapshot of the 3D printer’s own camera during the 3D printing process.
I figured I won’t share the result, but rather a glimpse at the magic that is 3D printing.

The city library and its district facilities in Kalk, Porz, and Rodenkirchen provide MakerBot Replicator+ machines, the accompanying software MakerBot Print, and filament in every color imaginable. (Red? Sure. Gold? Of course. Multicolor Galaxy? You bet!) The threshold for joining the Maker scene has never been lower.
